Native Breeds

Today’s breeds of British Native Ponies are the products of long and natural development of the wild ponies of the harsh and rugged regions of England, Wales, Scotland and Ireland. Generations of selective breeding have further developed these animals into the ponies that we all know today.

The protection of the future of these animals rest with the individual Breed Societies, each of which issue a standard against which an individual pony can be measured. The Breed Societies also keep a register of pure and part breed ponies which can be used to trace the animals bloodlines back for many generations.
